Every year something a little special happens at Matamata College, and Reid & Harrison is proud to be a part of it.
Working with the school’s art department, we help shine a spotlight on the next generation of artistic talent through the Reid & Harrison Art Awards, an annual celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, and local youth expression.
Open to Matamata’s Budding Artists
The awards are open to all art students at Matamata College, though it’s typically the senior students from Years 11–13 who throw their brushes (and sometimes cameras) into the ring. Occasionally, a standout Year 10 might surprise us all, but the bar is always set high.
Each year’s submissions are as diverse as the students themselves, from vivid paintings to powerful photography. The variety is part of what makes the judging process so rewarding (and, truth be told, quite tough).
Judging the Talent
While several people have helped judge over the years, Keith Cooke has taken on the judging duties in recent times. But it’s not a solo mission: the College’s art teacher offers valuable insight into each submission, explaining the students' intent, technique, and influences before the final decision is made.
“It’s always a tough call,” says Keith. “But that’s a good problem to have, it shows the quality we’re seeing.”
What’s at Stake?
Beyond recognition, there’s a bit of a bonus for the top talent. The Supreme Winner receives a $500 cash prize, and their artwork becomes part of Reid & Harrison’s proudly growing collection of art pieces on the wall at the Reid & Harrison offices in Matamata. Runners-up and Emerging Artist winners are also recognised, ensuring a wide range of students are celebrated for their efforts and potential.
From paint to pixels, the winning work often reflects themes relevant to students’ lives, the region, and their unique take on the world, something we’re proud to showcase in our offices, on our website, and in the wider community.
More Than Just Art
This isn’t just about talent, it’s about nurturing young creativity, supporting local education, and creating meaningful links between business and the community.
We’re in the process of uploading historic winning pieces from previous years, building a full archive of incredible student talent over time. By next year, the collection will be fully up to date, featuring both past legends and future stars.
